Here are three common ways hybrid storage arrays are implemented.

  1. Installing Flash Storage Alongside HDD Storage:  This makes HDDs and SSDs interchangeable and is probably the simplest and easiest method to implement hybrid solutions.
  2. Shared Flash Appliance: With a shared flash appliance SSDs act as a persistent cache – similar to computers’ RAM – to improve how fast read and write applications are served to the end user. This means the flash storage can be used by multiple systems simultaneously. This also allows users the ability to experience high read/write speeds for applications while the disk storage system transfers data to and from HDD storage arrays. Through this method, flash storage can be installed on a PCI Express (PCIe) bus rather than a normal hard disk enclosure, delivering even faster speeds.
  3. Installing PCIe Flash Devices (SSDs) Directly on Servers: This dramatically increases the speed of desktop virtualization, effectively eliminating network latency between a CPU and persistent storage. Thus, VDI users experience performance similar to what they would have on a desktop, assuming memory and CPU number/speed is adequate.
